Campaign Report: OSR, Quickly (A West Marches Campaign using Whitehack 3e)

  WHAT IS THIS?     In my OSRIC campaign we have a small break of two weeks and since I am up to date with the session reports of that campaign, I will say a few things about other games that I participated in. This one in particular is one that I hold dear in my heart because it was my first OSR campaign that I' ve played and the first OSR sessions that I was a part in! I joined this games discord server on 2021 and played in this game for more than a year! So, I will describe what we did and how it went! THE RULESET     As you can see from the title (and the image at the top of the post), we used Whitehack 3e for this campaign. I have already said that my ruleset of choice is OSRIC/ ADnD 1e but I am open to try other games, just like I like playing games other than DnD from time to time. The fact that a powerful magic user was part of the group that they were about to face was very worrisome. So they decide to use Mia's stealthiness as well as a potion of invisibility and a potion of undetectable poison that they had from previous adventures to take him out. They 've learned that there are bandits' attacks coming from the Iron Wood Forest. They recruited some men-at-arms and decided to head there. They also collected the antidotes from the alchemist, so the next time they meet the spiders, they will have a solution at hand.     They travelled to the forest, which was one day away from Verbobonc. By hiring two agents and using their great fame in the city, they managed to find 13 available henchmen and they hired 8 of them.      Now that the party was of an important size once more, they went back to the dungeon of the elves. However, the one day and a half journey there wasn't uneventful. A few hours away from the city they were attacked by a giant hawk. During the first night, they met a patrol of Verbobonc that was returning to the city. But most unexpected was the appearance of 4 silver dragons the second day. They find a few barrels of wine and some copper coins. They also encounter a group of large spiders that they easily overpower. The party will also find a book of prayers for the elven demigod Ghandolan as well as a few big statues that depict him. As they continue their exploration unfortunately, they meet a group of huge spiders, far bigger than the previous ones, whose poisonous sting kills Norbor and Cleon. The rest of the party manages to force them to retreat.     Having lost two precious comrades, they travel back to Verbobonc as fast as possible. They reach the city without much trouble and there they ask the temple of St. Cuthbert to perform raise dead for their friends. They accept for a big prize. T

After a while, they will meet a group of strong zombies, some of them having the form of an elf that forced the party to retreat. Nardik lost consiouness and many of the party were heavily wounded. However, before they go they decided to search even more the current floor.      In the western part of the dungeon, they met a group of orcs, kobolds and troglodytes that they easily forced out and looted. After that, they decided to go outside, camp and come back the next day, so that the magic users can have access to their spells again.      Indeed, the next day they reenter the dungeon and fight the zombies. Session 45: The Elven Lair

The first two weeks didn't find anyone, but the last days before they begin their adventures they hired Steran, a cleric of St. Cuthbert. They also hired some other henchmen to make up for their losses.     Once they have assembled their crew, on Coldeven 5 of Common Year 578, the party decides to hea towards the elven lair that the sage told them about. After a day and a few hours of travel, they reach the northern part of Gnarley Forest and with a small investigation they find the entrance of the lair. Session 44: Even More Kobolds

A brutal fight will start, with the kobolds being well prepared. They managed to force Nolbor's orc to flee the battle by killing half of them and they also slaughtered quickly the men-at-arms of the group, the architect and the workers. Of course they took heavy casualties too and now the party and its henchmen fight a little more than 100 kobolds. One day later however, the rangers will scout a big group of orcs and kobolds heading their way.     The group needs to decide if they will abandon their current post and retreat back to Humming's End or if they stay to fight. After a brief talk, they decide to fight. They split their forces in two and plan to use their potions of human control to turn the orcs against each other.     Indeed when the orcs arrive, Nolbor and Korin having drunk the potions claim that they are far stronger than their leader and that the orcs should follow them to achieve great victories. They hired an architect who would help them construct a mechanism that will pull up the dragons from the cave and they also hired a few more men-at-arms.     They began their journey on Fireseek 1 and in their way they met a big group of gnomes that were heading towards Verbobonc. They chatted with them and offered them job at Humming's End for all their future projects of building walls for their village and expanding. Some of the gnomes were interested and they promised to reach Humming's End in a few days.     On Fireseek 5, the group reached Humming's End. They want them to have the goblinoids offer him food as usual and use this opportunity to sneak into its lair. The kobolds at first are reluctant to act against the dragon, but as soon as they realise that they have no other option if they want to live, they decide to cooperate.     So, the party and all of its henchmen march to the dragon's lair with a sheep and one of the kobolds. They force the kobold to take the sheep and offer it to the dragon while Mia follows closely to scout the lair and make sure that their plan works. They have dipped the sheep with a potion of diminution, to make the dragon smaller and an easier target. Mia, being invisible thanks to another potion that the party

Session 40: Into The Woods

They don't encounter anything out of order. Orbo however wil communicate with one deer and they will learn that deeper in the forest they are hunted by kobolds and they are forced to move to the west.      On Patchwall 5, the party is back on Humming's End and prepares to move deeper in the forest to find the kobolds. After a day of travel and using the rangers scouting skills, they manage to find the tracks of the kobold and by following them they reach their
