PCs:
Urikas the elf, F1/MU1
Zyla the eld, C1
SESSION REPORT:
A week of rest passed for the party and at Reading 18 they were ready to go back to the Moathouse. The three hirelings that assisted them in the previous expedition wouldn't join them because Grengag offered them a high paid easy job and they should leave immediately to take it. They thank them for the cooperation and bid the party farwell. However, Grengag offers them 3 new hirelings to accompany them, this time for free. Samwich would stay behind to help some local farmers.
So, Urikas, Zyla, Spugnoir, Elmo, Furnok and the three hirelings arrive at the dungeon. After they explore a few rooms they are ambushed by bandits and the 3 hirelings that were there to help them, betrayed them and joined forces with the attackers. The party manages to defeat them and returns to the village to heal.
A week passes, the group searches for new hirelings and nobody came up. Hommlet is a small village after all. So at Reading 25, Urika, Zyla, Spugnoir, Elmo and Furnok go back to continue searching the Moathouse. Things unfortunately didn't turn out as they hoped.
After a little venturing around, they reached a room where they were ambushed by ghouls! The undead creatures managed to paralyze quickly almost every member of the party besides Zyla. The brave elf continued trying to turn the enemy away with the power of her God, but she failed. Not thinking about abandoning her comrades, she continued trying to turn them away until eventually they overpowered her also.
And just like that, the brave adventurers found their horrific end, at the hands (or maybe mouths) of the terrible ghouls.
LOOT AND KILLS:
Loot:
Not much for the party, plenty for the ghouls' empty stomachs
Kills:
A few bandits for the party, 5 adventurers for the ghouls
THOUGHTS ABOUT THE SESSION:
What the hell??? I was expecting things to go bad when they meet Lorath, but I definitely didn't see that one coming. TPK in session 6!!!
The session seemed ominous from the beggining. Samwich's player tried to join the session but couldn't do it because of technical reasons and the party had to go on without him. Also, once they returned to the village after the first expedition, I rolled some dice to see if any henchman was available and noone did besides the 3 guys that already assist them.
They talked a little about maybe ending a little earlier this session but they decided to continue. We usually play 3 hours session and we had one more hour to kill, come on, what go wrong. Famous last words...
The party took the whole thing really well. We all burst into laughter with the TPK and the funnier thing was Samwich's player asking what happened in the chat after a few minutes, only to realise that the rest of the party is dead...
Another thing that I want to note is that I didn't know how to handle turn undead. The OSRIC rules don't specify how many times the cleric can attempt it so I allowed Zyla to keep trying. I think she tried 3 times and failed all of them. After a little more research in the 1e DMG, I will allow the clerics to use turn undead as many times as they want but only once in every creature. So if you fail to turn a group of skeletons, you can't try to turn them again, your connection to your God is not yet strong enough, in the same way that a thief can't attempt to open a locked door twice using his thieves' skills.
But now, we have a situation in our hands. The whole party and the most important NPCs of Hommlet are dead. While it's certainly a victory for the bad guys, the group's death and especially Elmo's who was popular among the villagers, will not go unnoticed.
