Session 0: How (and why) it all started!

    WELCOME

Howdy adventurers and welcome to my blog!

I am GoldDigger and I took the liberty to share my thoughts and experiences after I ran a ADnD/OSRIC campaign. Basically the campaign is still running, in a few days we will play session 36 if I am not mistaken (I am not). I hope that they could come to use for someone and if not, I think that they will help me looking back at them as time passes by. But let's start with the basics.

     WHAT IS THIS BLOG ABOUT?

That's a fair question! I am basically a guy who entered the hobby of TTRPGs through 5e. Even to this day, 5e is the TTRPG that I have played the most, however I am sure that in a few months OSR will have surpassed it, since I am running an OSRIC campaign and participate in two other ADnD campaigns, all of them being weekly. I decided to make that shift because while I had a great time playing 5e, the lack of competitiveness and challenge made me search for something new.

That new thing of course was the OSR community. I 've read many rulesets and blogs, reddit posts with countless responds etc and I really fell in love with the concept. Soon enough, I joined a few discord servers and after I downloaded many free rulesets and bought some that weren't free, I started playing! I tried many systems, mainly Whitehack, OSE and KnK (a greek game inspired by odnd). After that I wanted to try running a campaign to experience how to referee an old school game. I have ran a lot of 5e but nothing OSR.

So a year and a half ago I decided to give it a try. I picked OSRIC as the system and Tomb of the Serpent King as the module. It felt more complete in my eyes as it had tables and advices for more aspects of the game and since I was inexperienced it would be more helpful. The session didn't go very well, however I tried again a few weeks later with another willing party. Since I wanted to try old school gaming, I decided to use OSRIC but this time to try running an original TSR module. I picked U1 and we had a blast. The party managed to finish the module after 4 sessions and wanted to continue but back then I wasn't ready yet to try something more than a module.

Time passed by however, and since I was a regular player in a great campaign with some locals, I decided to try again. Continuing with the strategy that worked, I wanted to test more TSR modules with OSRIC. So, I posted an add looking for players in a discord server and soon enough I had a party on my hands.

I didn't know how all this would work out. My plan was to just try out modules, so it should be a series of small adventures, perhaps with different parties. I was inexperienced and I wasn't sure if that would turn out to a campaign, plus I would have to find a way to make it work in English, which I am sure you have noticed is not my native language.

The results were great, against all odds and my pessimism! We started with T1 and once we finished it the party wanted to continue and now the campaign is going strong!

What I want is to write down my experiences in order to organise them and perhaps offer a few advices to guys who are in a similar position. So, you won't find gaming theory articles, reviews and things like that. You will find session reports of my campaign, where I will note down what I 've prepared, what happened, how many xp and loot the party took and what tips I can give myself (and you) from this!

I hope you will enjoy! Let the adventures begin!!!

  1. What a pleasure to come across your blog. My gaming club and I have a similar story. After years of running Pathfinder and 5e, I started running 1974 OD&D. What started out as a one shot turned into 400 weekly sessions and a blog chronicling the Campaign. In all honesty it has been a blast. Our next Campaign is a Greyhawk inspired AD&D foray. Looking forward to more posts and reading about your experiences with AD&D. If you haven't already I highly recommend checking out Anthony Huso's blog, The Blue Bard. Wishing you all the best and Happy gaming!

Cauldron OSR Eurocon 2024 Day I

Wonderfull news! Me and two players from the OSRIC campaign attended the European OSR convention known as Cauldron in Germany! I will cover on this post how I experienced this truly amazing convention! Bare in mind that some details might have be mistaken because I didn't expect to write a report about it but I am so fired up by the con that I really want to share as much as I can! Also there will be major spoilers for every module I was involved in so be warned that if you want to play them in the future, skip carefully that part! Let's go then! THE TRIP     I began the journey to Germany from Athens where I live. I met Nico, my only compatriot in this adventure, at the airport on Thursday morning, the first day of the convention. I must admit that in the beggining I was a little sceptical about this whole expedition. I didn't know any of the guys involved in person besides Nico, I hadn't been in Germany before so we were really...

Cauldron OSR Eurocon 2024 Day II

After a crazy day of an exhausting trip, a great on-train session provided by Nico and an unbelievable Braunstein game, we took a much needed nap. However it wasn't meant to last for long because at 7:30 we had to be awake to bath, reach the dinner table at 8 and after that enlist ourselves for a game! Let's go! THE BREAKFAST     It's worth mentioning that our food was delicious and it was all created by the volunteers and the families of the Nexus club that hosts the event! They worked endlessly to make sure everything was provided and the result was unbelievable! I wish I could express how grateful me and everyone else is for this effort! A lot of cheese, coffee, sausage and juice found its way to our bellies and we were ready to begin our adventures!!!     Once again be warned that the rest of the report contains spoilers for every module that I took part in, so if you want to avoid them, skip the specific section. Cauldron OSR Eurocon 2024 Days III+IV

The first two days of cauldron had exceeded any expectation that I could possibly have! Every game was great, from the crazy Braunstein game to the deadly tournament module and the slaying of dragons and mad cultists, we were all having a great gaming time! Personally, my only concern was to get down for lunch on time in order to be able to enlist myself for the games I wanted. But that was not the case for the third day of Cauldron.       You see, the previous day we were informed that a great naval wargame would take place and we had already signed ourselves up! Just like the Braunstein game, it would take place on the gaming world of the ADDKON campaign and me, Nico and Mitch were excited to take part in this! So, we woke up, ate our breakfast and got ready to fight! NAVAL WARGAME BATTLE The table is set for battle     DM Ghoul have made the ambitious decision to run a great naval wargame on Saturday with 7 different factions forming up two...
