SESSION RECAP:

The party, having defeated the pirates, used its miraculous figurine to inform the merchants of Verbobonc that they have 3 cogs and they are willing to sell them but they need to have sailors sent to them so that they can get them on the port of the city. Until an answer arrives, they decide to rest there. They choose to sleep in the ships, taking advantage of the crow's nest to watch out for enemies.

However, in the middle of the night they will have to face a terror they never had before. Two giant tentacles appeared from the river's waters and engulfed one of the cogs, while 6 more attacked the ships passengers. Larth, Blerduth, Zasti, Rotoris and Zanyas, the remaing halfling thief, were caught by this creature and were killed by its strong grapple.

Everyone panicked but Mia kept her cool and decided to use the party's emergency button: the wand of turn flesh to stone. She hit the monster with that and despite its good chance to avoid it, it failed. It became a giant octopus statue and took with it the ship and its dead passengers to the bottom of the big river.

In this cog was one third of the treasure that they had found. In order to not lose it, Mia drinks a potion of polymorph, becomes a sea elf and dives to collect it. She was lucky enough to avoid any possible encounters and after a few minutes she came back with the jewels and Larth's magic sword.

Meanwhile, a group of merchantes responded and demanded to inspect the ships before buying them. The group informed them that they should hurry because they have already lost one. The merchants said that they will send sailors soon.

Indeed, three days later the sailors arrived. Their leader offered the party half the normal price of a cog, claiming that they are damaged by the many battles that the pirates had. They offered however to ferry the remaining men of the party back to town with them. The group agreed, took the money and returned to Verbobonc.

In there, the halflings were angry by the fact that both of their comrades were killed in the expedition. In order to make them feel better, the party gave them job to the inn of Humming's End.

Also, all of the group's henchmen began their training. In the meantime, the party started preparing a big tournament whose winners would have the honor of accompanying the party in their fight against the dragons.

THOUGHTS AFTER THE SESSION:

This was the first time that such an encounter took place. Since they were sleeping on the cogs but they were docked near the camp of the pirates, when an encounter appeared, I gave it 50/50 to be either aquatic or from the plain field. It was an aquatic and it didn't disappoint!

There are some notes there of course. First of all, how could a giant squid arrive in a river? I don't know to be honest, but it was in the aquatic encounter tables. From what I understand this table was meant to be about oceans etc but still, this river is close to a huge lake and it's quite possible that the squid lost its way and appeared there, looking for food.

Secondly, because it was the first time I had this as an encounter I misread the damage that the henchmen should have taken. It was saying 1d6x8 meaning 8 attacks with its tentacles with 1d6 each and I thought 1d6 damage multiplied by 8! Anyway, the damage was getting bigger in every passing turn so since most of the henchmen were level 1, anyone wrapped by it would be killed in the second turn, while I killed them in the first. Small difference.

Thirdly, this wand once more saved the party. I announced them that the squid had a saving throw of 7, I rolled it openly and I got a 6! Unbelievable! Once more they have beaten the odds! However, in this adventure, while they accumulated a lot of gold, they lost many henchmen. The magic users and especially the illusionist were unique assets. Also, this was the wand's last charge!

However, they will use all this gold to create a big tournament and recruit some more henchmen! Let's see how that will go!

Campaign Report: OSR, Quickly (A West Marches Campaign using Whitehack 3e)

WHAT IS THIS?     In my OSRIC campaign we have a small break of two weeks and since I am up to date with the session reports of that campaign, I will say a few things about other games that I participated in. This one in particular is one that I hold dear in my heart because it was my first OSR campaign that I' ve played and the first OSR sessions that I was a part in! I joined this games discord server on 2021 and played in this game for more than a year! So, I will describe what we did and how it went! THE RULESET     As you can see from the title (and the image at the top of the post), we used Whitehack 3e for this campaign. I have already said that my ruleset of choice is OSRIC/ ADnD 1e but I am open to try other games, just like I like playing games other than DnD from time to time. What I want is to have rules that are consistent, help you understand the spirit of the game and provide you a specific goal.     Whitehack does that amazingly well!...

Cauldron OSR Eurocon 2024 Day I

Wonderfull news! Me and two players from the OSRIC campaign attended the European OSR convention known as Cauldron in Germany! I will cover on this post how I experienced this truly amazing convention! Bare in mind that some details might have be mistaken because I didn't expect to write a report about it but I am so fired up by the con that I really want to share as much as I can! Also there will be major spoilers for every module I was involved in so be warned that if you want to play them in the future, skip carefully that part! Let's go then! THE TRIP     I began the journey to Germany from Athens where I live. I met Nico, my only compatriot in this adventure, at the airport on Thursday morning, the first day of the convention. I must admit that in the beggining I was a little sceptical about this whole expedition. I didn't know any of the guys involved in person besides Nico, I hadn't been in Germany before so we were really...

The fact that a powerful magic user was part of the group that they were about to face was very worrisome. So they decide to use Mia's stealthiness as well as a potion of invisibility and a potion of undetectable poison that they had from previous adventures to take him out. The plan is to have an invisible Mia approach them when they prepare the meal of the day and poison the food that is intented for the magic user. Their prisoners informed them for the time that they usually eat and also for the fact that the wizard eats alone at his tower and one of his servants brings him his food.     However, the group knew that some ...
